Specialist Certification in SC
Certification as a "specialist" in a particular area of law in South Carolina signifies an elite level of experience and expertise within the field. The South Carolina Commission on Continuing Legal Education and Legal Specialization, which is sanctioned by the Supreme Court, outlines rigorous requirements for specialist certification. Attorneys seeking to be certified as specialists must pass a challenging oral and written examination, clearly demonstrate substantial involvement and experience in their field for the past five years by providing references regarding their reputation for competency and involvement in the field, and by demonstrating extensive time spent handling a wide range of legal matters within the field. In addition to the requirements for initial certification, specialists in each area of law are required to attend a significant number of continuing legal education courses each year to maintain the highest level of expertise in their field of certification.
